UP POLITICS: Jal Jeevan Mission Under Scanner After BJP MLA Raises Concerns

Fresh concerns have surfaced over the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission in Uttar Pradesh. The controversy follows an earlier public spat on January 30 between BJP MLA Brijbhushan Rajput and state minister Swatantra Dev Singh over alleged irregularities in the scheme. Now, a newly constructed water tank in Nagra Dang village of Mahoba district has developed cracks during testing, leading to water leakage just a day after completion. The tank was reportedly built at a cost of ₹65 lakh under the mission aimed at providing tap water to every household. Villagers have accused the contractor of poor-quality construction and corruption, alleging substandard materials were used. A complaint has been filed with the District Magistrate demanding action against those responsible. The issue has triggered political reactions. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav targeted the BJP government, alleging corruption and calling the scheme a “Commission Mission” instead of Jal Jeevan Mission. The Indian National Congress also questioned the transparency of the project. Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh minister Narendra Kashyap defended the government, stating that any shortcomings would be rectified and that development remains the priority of the state government.
