Breaking News: Supreme Court Questions Direct Plea in Assam CM Video Case

In a significant development, the Supreme Court of India heard a plea related to a controversial video allegedly involving the Chief Minister of Assam. During the hearing, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) questioned the petitioner’s counsel about why the matter was brought directly to the Supreme Court instead of the High Court. The CJI remarked that a new trend seems to be emerging where, during election periods, the Supreme Court is turned into a “political battleground.” The bench questioned whether every issue must be heard by the apex court and emphasized that High Courts are fully competent to handle serious matters. Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing the petitioner, argued that since the case involves a sitting Chief Minister, it warrants consideration by the Supreme Court. He also suggested that if the court is unwilling to hear the matter, it could transfer the case to a High Court outside Assam. However, the Supreme Court maintained that there is no reason to doubt the capability of the Assam High Court and its judges. The bench reiterated that not every matter can be directly entertained by the apex court unless exceptional circumstances exist.
