New Chapter Ahead: BNP Eyes Pragmatic Ties with India

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on its sweeping victory, the party swiftly responded with thanks, expressing confidence that India-Bangladesh ties would grow stronger. Analysts say the election outcome reflects a victory for democracy in Bangladesh and signals political stability after years of turbulence. The defeat of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is widely viewed as a rejection of hardline politics, with women, youth, minorities, and even sections of Awami League supporters backing BNP. Experts believe the new government under Tarique Rahman will seek a pragmatic working relationship with India, focusing on trade, water-sharing, and border management. However, the issue of Sheikh Hasina’s possible return could emerge as the first diplomatic test between Dhaka and New Delhi.
