DoT Allows Licence-Free Use of Lower 6GHz Spectrum for Wi-Fi Routers, Sets Power Limits

The Department of Telecommunications has opened 500MHz of spectrum in the lower 6GHz band for licence-free Wi-Fi, a move aimed at improving indoor connectivity and enabling Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7. The new framework allows low-power indoor and very low-power outdoor devices to operate in the 5925–6425MHz range under defined power and emission limits. Usage restrictions apply to certain environments, while the upper 6GHz band remains set aside for mobile services following industry-wide debate.
